Description

The module attempts to bridge the gap between European Studies on the one hand, and Studies in literature and the arts on the other. In aiming at the establishment of common values through social dialogue around artistic fictions of fear among European citizens, it attempts to make its contribution firstly at the university level where future policy makers, civil servants and civil-society representatives of the European Union are currently receiving their education. By taking one of the two courses offered as part of the module, graduate and undergraduate students will be invited to take a double look at both the actual issues that EU is facing and the fears reflected in literary and artistic fictions, particularly in relation to the four thematic fields of democracy, equality, immigration and the environment. Participating students will hence approach these fictions not just as fantastic or theoretical exercises in story-telling but as representations of some of the actual social, political and economic concerns of the European Union.
